    1 bulb of Aponogeton madagascariensis

Aponogeton madagascariensis is a speciality in botanical gardens all over the world. It used to be so much in demand that it almost became extinct in its natural environment in Madagascar A. madagascariensis makes such high demands on water quality and the bottom that it can only be recommended as a solitary plant in large, specialised aquariums in which the water is replaced frequently. There are several varieties, with different structures and leaf widths.

Aponogeton madagascariensisis is without comparison among the oddest plants in our aquaria. Instead of normal mesophyll, a lattice full of holes develops and this makes the plant a rarity in every botanical garden or collection of water plants. However, Aponogeton madagascariensis is a very difficult plant to grow and should be kept as a proud solitary plant only in specialized aquaria. It requires a nutrient and calcareous substrate with frequent water replacement because it tends to loose the older leaves in 'oldwater'.

Also, Aponogeton madagascariensis prefers diffused indirect light as it comes from shady banks and brooks with no direct sunshine. In all circumstances this is a very difficult plant to culture also due to the fact that many different varieties require quite different environmental conditions. Nowadays, Aponogeton madagascariensis is also produced from tissue cultures.

Note: Plant will be shipped without leaves. Leaves will re-grow in a few days.
